Logo Design News This Week 2.46

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday last week, this week’s edition of logo design news includes items for the past two weeks. Here’s what caught our attention over the past fortnight:

New ITV Logo DesignWe saw several news stories about the new logo for British broadcaster ITV, which unveiled a new logo last week. The logo was designed in-house and will be used beginning early next year. As the Brits are want to do, there is a bit of criticism of the logo. ITV describes the logo as “a warm, bold design based on a formalized version of human handwriting.” But critics were a little less enthusiastic, saying the logo “hurt the eyes”. Designer reviews are a little more mixed.

We originally told you about this story before the election. A man tattooed the Mitt Romney campaign logo on his face to show his devotion to his preferred candidate. At the time we admired his devotion, if not his sense of propriety. Now it appears he is having second thoughts.

New Stanford University Logo DesignStanford University updated their logo this past week. The old logo was too academic and classic (generally a good thing for, you know, an expensive private university). Worse, it was designed for old-world applications like stationery. But the world has changed over the past few years, and Stanford’s prominent place in Silicon Valley demands that they stay ahead of the curve. The new logo is supposed to work better “digitally”. It features a thicker font which will display more easily online and other digital uses like iPhone apps. We like it and expect other universities to follow suit.

Stanford wasn’t the only school with a new logo this week. Nebraska Unversity unveiled a new secondary logo with a new block “Huskers” across the N.

West Michigan Whitecaps Logo DesignWe saw several other sports logos receive updates this week. Starting with a new logo for Boise State. Although we hate the smurf turf and think the Broncos a bit over rated, we have to admit the new logo is pretty good. Alas, we can’t say the same thing for the new logo for the West Michigan Whitecaps (a minor league baseball team). We’re not exactly sure what that baseball/fish/tiger thing is, but apparently its worth putting in a logo (and featuring here). The Buffalo Bisons (another minor league baseball team) got a new logo this week as well. This one is a little more along the “actual animal” style for the mascot. Lastly, the St. Charles Chill (hockey team) got a new logo this week too.

Grey County Logo DesignThat tiger/fish thing isn’t the only bad logo we saw. Grey County throws out its entry in the bad logo of the week contest. Let’s see there’s a meaningless icon, multiple fonts, a lack of balance. Oh, and a price tag of $30,000. Yikes.

And speaking of expensive logos, here’s another logo that cost the Nanaimo Econonic Development Corporation nearly $25,000. Guys, you can get a great logo for less than $50 here.

Lastly we bring you the Thanksgiving day logo from Google, celebrating the Macy’s Parade in New York City. Click the link to see what Bing had on its homepage that day as well. And search engine DuckDuckGo celebrated Snoopy’s birthday with this special logo.

Did we miss anything? Let us know.
